Rumya Sundaram, citizen scientist coordinator for the Key Biscayne Community Foundation, will present this month’s Citizen Science Project’s Lunch & Learn program, addressing ‘keystone’ species in the environment.
In construction, a “keystone” is the central stone at the top most point of an arch, which locks the entire thing together. Without that stone, the structure would collapse.
When speaking about nature, keystone species have a similar function. They play an outsized role in their environment, meaning while there may only be a few in a keystone species, their effect on their surroundings is pivotal to the survival of an entire ecosystem.
