Longtime Key Biscayne resident Allene Nicholson, 83, vividly recalls the first Biscayne Lighthouse 10K/5K run/walk, which took place 47 years ago.
Nicholson and her friend, Mary Ann Smith, then in her mid-30s, wanted to see who was the fastest runner in Key Biscayne.
“She won first prize because she was a better runner,” said Nicholson, an attorney. “I was the second fastest runner. A good number of people were running, but we outlasted them to take the two top spots among the women.”
