We join our community in mourning the loss of friend and firefighter Ron Erbel who passed Saturday night, April 9th at 9:11pm, surrounded by family. Ron was the personification of community. He was a volunteer firefighter before we had a department and a firefighter paramedic with the Key Biscayne Fire Department until his retirement in 2019.
Ron Erbel was a hero of the September 11th attacks whose terminal cancer happened as a result of his service, working 17 days in the ruins of the Twin Towers.
In life, even as his was coming to an end, Ron Erbel was always focused on others. Ron, along with wife Victoria Jackson, contacted the Foundation to set up a scholarship fund to help Key Biscayne firefighters, their children, and grandchildren: The Ron Erbel Fund for Firefighters.
“I want to take care of our firefighters in any way we can.” Per Ron’s specifications, a requirement of the application is 15 years of service as a firefighter to the Key Biscayne Fire Department. “After so many years, we know these folks are connected and want to be part of this great community of Key Biscayne.”
We are honored to have the Ron Erbel Fund for Firefighters under our charitable umbrella. We look forward to working with Victoria to ensure the scholarship meets their wishes.
